Material Requirements
ELECTRONIC LODGEMENT
Because SILICON CHIP is now printed by a direct computer-to-plate process all material should be lodged in electronic format.
This can be from any major page make-up program (eg Pagemaker, Quark Express, InDesign etc) or from a major drawing/assembly program (eg Corel Draw, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop etc). If you have material prepared in any other program please call SILICON CHIP to determine acceptability (for example,
Microsoft Publisher has caused problems in the past).
Please ensure that all graphics files are converted to CMYK format and are included with the document, along with any fonts used. An accurate colour proof must be included with all electronically lodged files. The advert will be printed as close as possible to this proof, bearing in mind the limitations
of some computer printers compared to web-offset printing.
The best format to lodge electronically is as Adobe PDF files for prepress but ensure that "downsampling of bitmap images" and "convert CMYK to RGB" are both turned OFF. PDF files are invariably smaller than native files.
Alternatively an EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) file for PC can be supplied, outputted at 266 lines per inch with a Linotronic 300 V49.3 selected as the printer description. Again, please ensure that all fonts are included with the file.
Acceptable formats are CD-ROM, Zip (100 or 250MB), etc. As a general rule, if an advert will fit on a floppy disk it will generally not be of high enough resolution to reproduce properly (possible exceptions are small, text-only advertisements).
Material may also be uploaded via the SILICON CHIP FTP site. Details will be supplied on request. Small files may be emailed but please DO NOT email any advertisement or file over 3MB - use the FTP site.
SILICON CHIP is produced in PC (ie IBM) format but material is also accepted in Macintosh format. Macintosh files cannot be uploaded but are acceptable in electronic (ie CD/disk) format.
FILM
Four colour film separations are no longer used in the printing process. Apart from costing you extra money to have prepared initially, film separations may incur extra costs to you to have scanned back to computer files. Reproduction sometimes suffers in this process.
Therefore film separations should not be supplied unless no other option is available. If film must be supplied, four colour separations should be 133 line screen, positive, right reading emulsion down. Film must be accompanied by a chemical proof generated from that film. (If a
digital proof is supplied, the advert will be printed as close as possible to that proof).
For mono or spot adverts, a bromide with accurate colour mark-up is acceptable as a last resort but the electronic version (eg, EPS) is preferable. Because SILICON CHIP is printed four colours process, spot colours should be chosen from those colours (cyan, magenta, yellow). Other colours (mixes) may be
charged as four colours.
